The Griswolds are off on a family outing to Las Vegas, where they each have their own misadventures. Hapless dad Clark Griswold immediately starts losing money at blackjack, while his wife, Ellen, develops a crush on lounge performer Wayne Newton. Elsewhere, young Rusty is enthusiastically playing dice, and his sister, Audrey, winds up in seedy nightclubs. Can the family reunite and stay out of trouble?
After winning a European vacation on a game show, Clark Griswold convinces his reluctant family to accompany him. His wife, Ellen, is excited, but daughter Audrey is reluctant to leave her boyfriend behind, while teen son Rusty dreams of meeting girls. After arriving in London, the clan encounters one disaster after another as they travel through France, Germany and Italy, while Clark's attempts to cheer everyone up make things worse.
After his childhood buddy is murdered while visiting Detroit, rebellious cop Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) follows the leads to Beverly Hills, Calif., under the auspices of a vacation. He checks in with old friend Jenny Summers (Lisa Eilbacher) and starts to believe her boss, art dealer Victor Maitland (Steven Berkoff), might somehow be involved in the murder. However, Lt. Bogomil (Ronny Cox) of the Beverly Hills Police Department does not trust Foley, and hinders his search for evidence.
